I was listening to a replay of a Question and Answer, the host James Colquhoun from Food Matters was interviewing David Wolfe.   Here is a summary of a few of the question and answers from the interview.

 

 

 

 

Q.  When making a smoothie do I need to be concerned about too many fruits or too little protein?

A.  The initial drive in the beginning is to make it taste good and that usually leads to throwing bananas in there, dates, oranges some really sweet stuff.  That’s okay for awhile, but you can’t keep doing this forever.  You need get your vegetables into your blended drinks.

Q.  What is the difference between juicing and blending?

A.  Juicing is squeezing the juice out/shredding the juice.  You are getting all of the nutrition right into your blood in about 20 minutes.  It’s a great lift and hydration.   It is more of a snack.
Blending is a meal replacement.  You still have all the fibre there, the material is all there, it has just been liquefied.  We take some burden off the body when blending.

Q.  Can you go raw without stomach issues?

A.  You need to prepare your gut!  You need to have more soluble fibre and simple fibres like what is in berries, citrus fruits if you can handle the sugar.  Then work your way into fibrous greens and vegetables as you go.  You need to go slow.

Q.  What is your take on having fermented foods in your diet?

A.  It’s a great thing to have in your diet.  Having controlled cultured food is an important piece of the puzzle.  One serving of live fermented food per day is required.

Q.  What sort of supplements are you recommending.

A.  Vitamin D3 – (Vegan formula)  We can’t get a sufficient enough amount from foods.  B Vitamins – a good B Vitamin should turn your urine orange and yellow, a darker colour.  If they don’t you are not taking enough.  Omega 3 Fatty Acids – there are three, ALA blend (chia seed, hemp seed, flax seed) DHA and EPA blend (marine origin) pharmaceutical grade fish oil, krill oil, or vegan algae oil.

Q.  Is Soy bad?

A.  Soy is very estrogenic, toxically estrogenic for about 40% of the population.   That is way too high to make it a major food in the world.  It is too disturbing to too many people to make it a major useful food in the world.   So for that reason soy  isoflavones which are estrogenic for about 40% of the population in a negative way; for me it is just off my list, we don’t need that food, there are plenty of other choices that we can propel into the main 25 foods eaten by human kind.

Q.  Protein powder.  What do you recommend?

A.  Protein powders is one of those things that will be with us forever because they really work for a lot of people.  Quality of protein powder varies wildly, it can be very, very poor quality and that is why I am not into those weight gainers in those big tubs.  You really need to go for an organic product.  As soon as you say organic 99% of that market is gone.  You want to find the right mix.  I like the mix of amaranth protein, pea protein, quinoa protein, hemp protein, and some of the mixes of those proteins together. It should be a vegan product.  Whey varies wildly in quality. Just go with a vegan quinoa, amaranth, pea, quinoa, chia seed protein or something like that.
