Tips for Healthy Sleeping Habits

Healthy sleeping habits are an important part of our quality of life.  And yet, there are so many things that interfere with our sleep/wake cycle such as coffee, cigarettes, energy drinks, alarm clocks, electronics devices with back lights.  Sleep needs vary from person to person, be sure to schedule sleeping into your schedule and cross it off your To Do list each day.

Here is a list of tips for Healthy Sleeping Habits to incorporate into your day:

  • Keep to the same sleep schedule (same bedtime and wake time) during the week and on weekends.   By doing this it could help you fall asleep and stay asleep for the night.
  • Set a relaxing routine each night that allows you to wind down away from bright lights, stress or excitement.
  •  Avoid naps in the afternoon.
  •  Adopt an exercise routine each day.
  • Ensure your bedroom is a cool temperature, free from noise and any light.  Try using blackout curtains, eye shades or ear plugs if needed.
  • Ensure your mattress and pillows are comfortable.

Tips For Healthy Sleep Habits

  • Avoid bright light in the evening and expose yourself to sunlight in the morning. This will keep your circadian rhythms (wake/sleep cycle) in check.
  • Avoid alcohol, cigarettes, and heavy meals before bed.
  • Spend time an hour before bed, winding down. Try reading a book.   Avoid using an electronic device such as a laptop, it may make it difficult to fall asleep.  The  light from the screens is activating to the brain.
  • Having trouble sleeping, get out of bed and do something relaxing to tire yourself.   Do not take work, computers or televisions into your sleeping area.
