How To Avoid GMO Food
What is GMO?
GMOs (or “genetically modified organisms”) are organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering, or GE. This relatively new science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.
How To Avoid GMO Food
Buy Organic
Buy products labeled “100% organic,” “organic,” or “made with organic ingredients.”
Look for Non-GMO Project Seals
The Non-GMO Project is the only organization offering independent verification of testing and GMO controls for products in the U.S. and Canada. Buying products that are verified by our program is the best way to support the sustained availability of non-GMO choices in North America.
Avoid Potential “at risk”products
- Alfalfa
- Canola (approx. 90% of U.S. crops are GMO)
- Corn (all corn products, high fructose corn syrup and corn oil)
Elizabeth Yarnell of EffortlessEating.com stated, “At the Seeds of Doubt conference recently, Jeffery Smith, executive director of the Institute for Responsible Technology and GMO expert, assured us that even though almost 90% of the corn grown and eaten in this country is GMO corn, popcorn comes from a different seed and has not been genetically modified.”
- Cotton
- Papaya (most of the Hawaiian crops and crops from China are GMO)
- Soy (avoid soy lecithin. Tofu and soy sauce are not GMO)
- Sugar Beets
- Zucchini and Yellow Summer Squash
- Aspartame (Do you chew gum? Most gum has Aspartame. Check out Pur gum, no Aspartame!)
