Healthiest Spices For Your Body
Besides the amazing flavour that spices add to our food, studies have shown that many spices protect against disease and promote health. Plus, according to Traditional Tibetan Medicine every spice we use has its own healing properties.
“We’re now starting to see a scientific basis for why people have been using spices medicinally for thousands of years,” says Bharat Aggarwal, Ph.D., professor at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and author of Healing Spices.
Healthiest Spices
Here are just a few of the healthiest spices you can incorporate into your meals.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon contains iron, calcium and manganese and is loaded with antioxidants. It may also help control blood glucose and blood pressure in people with Type 2 diabetes. Sprinkle it on oatmeal or even try it on roasted carrots or sweet potatoes.
Cloves
Cloves are a a powerful spice loaded with antioxidants. Try adding ground cloves in place of cinnamon or ginger in baked goods.
Ginger
Ginger has been used for the treatment of colds, gastrointestinal problems and motion sickness. If you suffer from motion sickness or nausea, try using ginger to help control your nausea. Ginger tastes great in tea, smoothies, I love adding freshly grated ginger to my sautéed vegetables.
Thyme
Thyme has been used for years to help with sore throats. It has been in cough drops and mouthwashes as it aids in killing bacteria. It is best fresh as it it contains the most oil and the best flavour. Add some to your bean, egg or vegetable dishes.
Rosemary
Rosemary contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It can also help strengthen the immune system and help with digestion. Sprinkle some on your baked potatoes.
Turmeric

Saffron
Saffron helps clean the blood and liver and gently reduce inflammation in the body. Add a small pinch to your soups or stews.
