Did You Get Your Vitamin D Today?
November is Vitamin D awareness month!
Vitamin D plays an essential role in maintaining good health. It has several important functions, including helping to regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. These substances are needed to keep bones and teeth healthy. Without adequate Vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle and misshapen. — Google
Most of our Vitamin D comes from the sun. So it is important to get outside and enjoy frequent sun exposure. I love summer and getting outside working in my garden every chance I get. However, not everyone gets outside to enjoy the sun. More and more time is spent doing exactly what you are doing right now…. Sitting in front of a computer screen surfing the web. With the winter months fast approaching, we will have even less time spent taking in the sun’s rays.
Ways To Increase Vitamin D
- Frequent Sun Exposure
Get out into the sun, take a walk during the day, eat your lunch outside. Be sure to expose your arms, legs and/or face to the sun for a safe amount of time. Don’t burn yourself. - Vitamin D Supplement
The sun is the best form of Vitamin D, however during the winter months we tend to be covered up and not exposing our skin to the sun. A good quality vitamin D supplement is key during the winter months.
Vitamin D is important for your bones, heart, respiratory system and brain.

MYTH: You can produce Vitamin D through sunlight that passes through a window.
FACT: The glass window blocks the rays from the sun that help make vitamin D. –www.vitamindday.net
“Vitamin D deficiency is a global pandemic that has serious health consequences for children and adults. Improvement in the world’s vitamin D status could significantly reduce risk of many chronic illnesses including cardiovascular diseases, type II diabetes and many deadly cancers as well as infectious diseases including upper respiratory tract infections, influenza and tuberculosis.” — -Michael Holick, MD, PhD (Professor of Medicine, Physiology and Biophysics at Boston University School of Medicine)
