Chia seeds are tiny black or white seeds that come from a flowering plant Salvia Hispanica and is  part of the mint family.  You may best remember them as a child when you spread them on animal shaped pottery and watched as they sprouted green hair. Ch, ch, ch, chia….

Chia seeds may be small, but they are packed with nutrition.

Benefits of Chia Seeds:

  • about 10 grams of fibre in just two tablespoons
  • contains vitamins B, D  and E
  • provides 18 percent of the daily recommended value of calcium, 35 percent for phosphorus, 24 percent for magnesium, and about 50 percent for manganese
  • great source of omega 3 essential fatty acids
  • high in protein
  • helps slow digestion
  • low glycemic index helps improve your blood pressure and blood sugar levels
  • gluten free grain

How To Incorporate Chia Seeds Into Your Diet:

  • eat them raw or cooked
  • a mild taste makes them easy to incorporate into a variety of food including:  baked goods, smoothies, yogurt or sprinkle them on cereal
  • out of eggs and need a substitute:   mix 1 tablespoon of chia seeds with 3 tablespoons of water, let them sit for a few minutes, they will turn into a gel that can be used as a substitute in your baking
